What Causes Stained Teeth?

There are many things we do every day that can cause our teeth to become stained and discolored. And over time, the problem can grow worse. Below are the most common causes of tooth discoloration.

Foods

Foods and beverages that can stain your teeth are curries, soy sauce, berries, black tea, coffee, red wines, colas and red fruit juices. Keep in mind that acidic foods and beverages or extreme changes of hot and cold can cause teeth pores to expand, which also may allow stains to penetrate.

Tobacco

Other than serious health complications, using tobacco products almost always causes yellowed and stained teeth. Cigarettes, cigars, pipes and chew are the most common uses of tobacco, and all will stain teeth with continued use.

Medications

If used in excess, fluoride can cause tooth discoloration in children, as can tetracycline and derivative compounds of tetracycline such as minocycline and doxycycline. Minocycline has also been reported to cause teeth discoloration in adults.

Water

If a significant amount of water that contains high levels of fluoride is ingested, brownish stains on teeth may appear. This is especially true for those who drink water with high levels of fluoride during childhood.

Other

Easy Ways to Prevent Stained Teeth

It's never too late to begin preventing future stains. Even if your teeth are stained now, you can keep them from getting worse, or even reverse some of the damage by following these simple tips:

1. Practice proper dental hygiene.

Brush your teeth two or three times a day for approximately 4 minutes each time, and floss once a day. If you've had anything to eat or drink that may stain your teeth, rinse your mouth or brush as soon as possible.

2. See a dentist for regular checkups.

Every six months, you should make an appointment with your dentist for a cleaning and routine checkup. If you suspect tooth decay, or if you have discomfort, you may need to see your dentist in between checkups.

3. Avoid foods and beverages that stain.

If you can't seem give up foods and drinks that stain your teeth, rinse your mouth with water after consuming them and consider drinking through straws to reduce the amount of contact a staining beverage has with your teeth.

4. Stop using tobacco products.

Because all tobacco products cause yellow teeth, the best way to prevent future tobacco stains is to stop using these products immediately. If you have trouble quitting, consider finding a smoking cessation class or look into over-the-counter products that are designed to help you quit.

Precautions to Consider

Toxicity
